Evolution of a Landmark Institute of Orthopaedics
In 1987, a legendary visionary realized that Kanyakumari district was in need of a modern orthopaedic hospital. This visionary was Dr. S. Krishna Kumar. He took the first step in this direction on the 3rd of July, 1987, at 66, Court Road, Nagercoil. A small orthopaedic clinic was started. The public were educated about the evils of native treatment and the benefits of the modern system of orthopaedic care. Patients were initially admitted to and operated on at Natesan Hospital and Dr. Jayaharan Memorial Hospital.
It was equally necessary to update skills and technology.
In 1991, the present site abutting the railway overbridge at Parvathipuram was acquired, and the construction of an orthopaedic hospital was started. On the 1st of September, 1993, the hospital was inaugurated by freedom fighter
Dr. S. Muthukaruppa Pillai.
The need for expansion was felt, and so an additional building incorporating a modern operation theatre and additional rooms to accommodate international patients was constructed in 2003. In the same year, the hospital became an institute by getting accredited by the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi and started training postgraduates in orthopaedics leading to the DNB (Orthopaedics) qualification. Three candidates are trained every year.
Today, this institute stands tall with excellence in trauma care, joint replacement, spine surgery, paediatric orthopaedics, and minimally invasive techniques in the spine and joints.
On record we have completed more than one lakhs surgeries and still counting.
The hospital is known not only for its compassionate care and sound principles in treatment but also for the serene location in which it is situated and the calm, quiet atmosphere that surrounds it.
